How to Use Universal Control on Your MacBook

Universal Control is a handy feature that lets you use an iPad as a second monitor for your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. It also lets you connect newer Apple keyboards, mice, and trackpads to older computers like the Mac mini or iMac, so you can take advantage of features like Touch ID and Siri without needing to purchase new hardware. Universal Control makes it much easier to communicate with your other iCloud devices.

Basically, universal control kicks a**. This article will walk you through 3 easy steps of setting up universal control on your Macbook Pro or Macbook Air. Hope it helps.

Step #1

  • Open your Mac's System Preferences and click on Sidecar.

  • Tick the box next to "Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices." This will ensure that you can use Sidecar with other Apple devices in the future, not just iPad.

Step #2

Now that you've got the settings on your Macbook finalized, let's make sure everything else is set up to work correctly for universal control. There are four things that must be true in order for Universal Control to work on your MacBook: 1) the Mac and iPad must both be signed into the same iCloud account

2) they must be on the same Wi-Fi network

3) both devices' Bluetooth must be turned on

4) both devices have Sidecar enabled.

Once all those things are squared away, you should see a light grey bar above your dock. This is where you'll drag windows to show them on your iPad.

Step #3

In the left column, select the device you want to use as a second screen.

  • If your device doesn't appear in the sidebar, make sure it's on the same Wi-Fi network as your laptop.

  • If your device still won't show up, try quitting and restarting both your laptop and iPad.

So, that's how Universal Control works. Hopefully these steps are able to assist you in setting this up on your Macbook and your iPad.
